Forest Inventory Intern

Company Name:
National Audubon Society
Now in its second century, Audubon is dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that supports them. Audubon's mission is engaging people in bird conservation on a hemispheric scale through science, policy, education and on-the-ground conservation action. By mobilizing and aligning its network of Chapters, Centers, State and Important Bird Area programs in the four major migratory flyways in the Americas, the organization will bring the full power of Audubon to bear on protecting common and threatened bird species and the critical habitat they need to survive. And as part of BirdLife International, Audubon will join people in over 100 in-country organizations all working to protect a network of Important Bird Areas around the world, leveraging the impact of actions they take at a local level. What defines Audubon's unique value is a powerful grassroots network of nearly 500 local chapters, 22 state offices, 44 Audubon Centers, Important Bird Area Programs in 46 states, and 700 staff across the country. Audubon is a federal contractor and an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).
We are seeking two motivated and driven interns from Sewanee University to design and conduct a baseline forest inventory for our 3,000 acre property at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center. Following the removal of Chickasaw Indians in the 1830s, the entire landscape, like much of surrounding Marshall County, Mississippi, was intensely cultivated in cotton production for much of the 19th and early 20th century. Our 1,740 acres of forests are the result of a gradual cessation of agriculture over the last 75-80 years. Interns will have an opportunity to analyze current stand conditions through established survey plots. From this research, we are hoping to derive a factual story of our forest through the past century.
Housing is provided at the Davis House located on site at 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs, MS 36835. The historic home, built in the 1840s by Ebenezer Davis, was burned during the Civil War and later fully restored in the 1970s by John Shackleford and Margaret Finley Shackleford. The Davis House has a sunroom, fully furnished kitchen, library, and four upstairs bedrooms with two adjoining bathrooms, each with a shower. Each intern will have his/her own room, which is fully furnished with linens. Utilities are paid by Audubon.
We are looking to establish a baseline inventory of our 1,740 acres of forest based on a sample of 400 plots located randomly across our 3,000 acre property. Information will be gathered from quantitative and qualitative measurements that describe forest site attributes; stand characteristics (forest type, stand size and age, slope and aspect, disturbances); tree measurements on live and dead stems such as species, diameter, height, damage, tree quality, crown measurements; percent canopy cover; counts of regeneration; and estimates of growth and mortality; presence of invasive species. The baseline data and estimates will be used to compare future remeasurement data in compilations of statistical change estimates. The plots will be established so that they may be revisited at defined time intervals.
